John (Hebrew: יוחנן, Yōkhānān; Greek: Ἰωάννης, Iōannēs; Arabic: يحيى, Yahyā and يوحنا, Yūḥanna; "Name means::YHWH is Gracious"), in its various forms, is the second most common given-name in the world (Muhammad being the most common) as well as a common surname.

Biblical use

John is the name of three significant people in the Bible:

John is also the name of four books of the New Testament: the Gospel of John, I John, II John, and III John.

It is noteworthy that the Apostle Peter is referred to in some passages (e.g. John 1:42) as the son of John, and in others as the son of Jonah (or Jonas). The two words are different names in Hebrew, but in New Testament Greek they are very similar, leading to discrepancies among some manuscripts.
