The golden calf (Hebrew: עֵגֶּל הַזָהָב, ‘ēggel hazâhâv) according Exodus 32:4 was a golden idol in the form of an calf that was created by Aaron when Moses ascended Mount Sinai to receive the commandments of God.

The incident is known in the Hebrew as Hebrew: חֵטְא הַעֵגֶּל, ḥēṭ’ ha‘ēggel, meanining "The Sin of the Calf".
