The Menorah (Hebrew: מנורה , Menorah), is a seven-branched lampstand (candelabrum, candlestick), and one of the main symbols of Judaism. Not to be confused with the Hanukkah Menorah (Hebrew: חנוכיה, chanukiah or hanukiah), a candelabrum with nine branches,[1] eight branches plus one, the shamash, most of the times mobile, used on Hanukkah.[2] Currently, the Menorah is a symbol of the State of Israel together with Star of David.
During the period of the Temple, a Menorah, full of olive oil, was permanently lit in the Temple of Jerusalem.[3] It was placed at the left as the priest entered the Holy Place.[4]
