The word Geology comes from the Greek word geo meaning earth, and logy which basically means "the study of". It is the scientific study of the origin, history, and structure of the earth. This is usually taken to mean the formation of the fossil record or geologic column, and other major features (mountains, rivers, etc.). Geology provides clear evidence of the global flood of Noah, which strongly supports a young earth and goes against the long ages the theory of evolution requires to operate.
The Grand Canyon provides a tremendous example of the results of large-scale erosion, which is important in developing an understanding of the mechanisms likely to have been active in the Biblical global flood. For many years creation scientists have taught that the Grand Canyon was formed rapidly when a large lake on the northern border of the Colorado Plateau broke through its natural dam. In contrast, secular science has taught that the Colorado river eroded the canyon gradually over millions of years based on the uniformitarian assumptions. However, researchers have recently determined that the Grand Canyon is a geologic infant in comparison to previous estimates, and it has been concluded that indeed much of the canyon was eroded rapidly as a result of dam failure.
Niels Stenson (aka Nicolaus Steno) is credited with discovering and formulating the fundamental principles of geology and stratigraphy and also showed a eye for paleontology and anatomy.
The three principles of stratigraphy he formulated were:
- Principle of superposition: that in a series of layers of rock made of sediment (sedimentary rock), the older rock layers are under the newer/younger layers.
- Principle of original horizontality: rock layers are formed originally in a horizontal position, and go out of that shape due to disturbances later on.
- Principle of lateral continuity: rock layers are spread out continuously unless a barrier stops it, or further changes in landscape break those sediment layers apart.
His principles assumed an original fluid state of rock and minerals, a theory which was aided by his knowledge of the biblical flood.

One of the ironies of the evolution-creation debate is that the creationists have accepted the mistaken notion that the fossil record shows a detailed and orderly progression and they have gone to great lengths to accommodate this "fact" in their Flood geology. (David M. Raup, "Evolution and the Fossil Record", Science, Vol. 213, No. 4505, 17 July 1981, p.289).
