In the late 1800's the tulip was something of a obsession for gardeners. They where all striving to create a black tulip, and although they got them very dark purple but never black. Illustration Tulipa sylvestris

Tulips are perennial bulbous plants that can grow up to 70 cm tall. The flowers themselves consist of 6 tepals and a number of disk shaped petals. The stem of the tulip is rather thick and sprouts a large amount of waxy textured leaves.

Reproduction

Tulips reproduce sexually through seed, and vegetatively by underground bulbs.

Ecology

The Tulip plant is native to southern Europe, northern Africa and Asia. They require cold winters to grow properly and therefore cannot grow in the tropics.
