Columbidae is the name for a group of passerine birds, and the only living taxonomic Family of the Order Columinformes. It includes about 300 species of pigeons and doves, and many of the Genera within this Family contain both. This is largely due to the almost interchangeable use of the terms "pigeon" and "dove" when identifying these varieties. In general, pigeons are larger than doves, but this is not consistently applied.
The Dodo bird and Rodrigues Solitaire are both extinct varieties of Columbiformes classified in the Family Raphidae.
