The root is the organ of a vascular plant that typically lies below the surface of the soil although in some plants the root can also be aerial or aerating. The roots, generally, grow away from light in what is called negative phototropism (skototropism). Its main functions are plant anchorage, absorption of water and dissolved minerals and conducting them to the stem and storage of food reserves.[1]

Types of root systems

Tap Root & Fibrous Root

Two types of root systems may develop from the embryonic root (the radicle) in the seed[2]:

  • Tap root - Present in dicots
  • Fibrous root system - Present in monocots
