Magnesium Hydroxide, also known as the milk of magnesia is a chemical used for certain things. It is an inorganic compound, and it's chemical formula is, Mg(OH)2. It's first term for milk of magnesia was first used in 1872. Magnesium Hydroxide has been used as a antacid for upset stomach, indigestion, and heartburn. Also used for waste water treatment and fire retardant.
Properties
Magnesium is a silver white and active metal. It has many compounds. Magnesium is part of the alkaline-earth metals. Researchers have figured that it connects with water pretty slow. Magnesium interacts with many kinds of acids. [2] Hydroxide is a chemical compound that contains the hydroxyl group. Inorganic hydroxides have hydroxides of metals, that are hydroxide and calcium hydroxide. Organic hydroxides have the alcohols. [3]
Magnesium Hydroxide is white powder, that is synthesized from seawater with the addition of calcium hydroxide (milk of lime). It is raw material of magnesium material. When it is in water it forms milk of magnesia. This milk of magnesia has been used as a antacid for stomach pain. [4] The formula for Magnesium Hydroxide is Mg(OH)2. For chemicals properties, the atomic number for Magnesium is 2, Hydrogen has 1, and oxygen has 16. Each of the elements has it's individual electronic configurations. Magnesium is [Ne] 3s2. Hydrogen is 1s1, and Oxygen is [He] 2s2 2p4. In metric the density is 2.34 g/cm3, and it's Molar mass is 58.83 g/mol. It's melting point is 350°C. [5]
Synthesis / Occurrences
Magnesium comes from magnesia. In compounds, magnesium usually has +2 oxidation state because of the sharing or loss of its two 3 electrons.[6]
The chemical formula for Magnesium Hydroxide is Mg(OH)2. It is an organic compound. When it dissolves in water, its big enough for it to dissolve to make ions in the solution, for the suspension.Magnesium Hydroxide can be used as a antacid and laxatives. It connects with the absorption of iron and folic acid. The antacid comes from hydroxide ions, which are in charge for neutralizing the acid. Brucite is the mineral for Magnesium Hydroxide.[7]
Uses
Magnesium Hydroxide is used as a big item production in our modern world. Magnesium Hydroxide powder can be used for waste water treatment and fire retardant. Also used for health treatments. [8] Magnesium is a natural mineral. It is important to many systems in our bodies, especially our nerves and muscles. [9]
Magnesium hydroxide, also known as the Milk of magnesia, can affect health treatment. It is a antacid and a laxatives. This antacid is known for reducing excess acid in the stomach. It helps remove heartburn, upset stomach, or indigestion. It usually comes as a tablet and liquid to by mouth. If you or anyone will take this medicine, always read the instructions for directions and more information for medical uses. Always ask your doctor. [10] Magnesium Hydroxide has also become a popular treatment for reducing oiliness of the skin. [11]
History
Kohn Callen, an American inventor, received a patent for Magnesium Hydroxide, on May 4, 1818. Sir James Murray used magnesia to treat the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, from stomach pain, in 1829. It was amazing for James Murray because he was specified as a physician for two subsequent Lords Lieutenants and Anglesey, and was knighted. After his death in 1873, 2 years later, his fluid magnesia was invented.[12]
By Charles Henry Phillips, in 1872, the phrase milk of magnesia was first used for a white-colored, aqueous, mildly alkaline suspension of magnesium hydroxide. When it was sold, the brand name was always Phillips' Milk of Magnesia for medicinal usage. Milk magnesia may been used by another owner. USPTO registrations showed that "Milk of Magnesia" and "Phillips' Milk of Magnesia", are both registered to Bayer, owned by GlaxoSmithKline. The non brand name in the UK, for "Milk of Magnesia" and "Phillips' Milk of Magnesia" is "Cream of Magnesia."[1]
