Tin (II) chloride, sometimes called stannous chloride, is a white solid. It dissolves in water easily. When the water solution is diluted, a white precipitate of tin oxychloride (Sn(OH)Cl) forms. Tin (II) chloride is a reducing agent. It is made by dissolving tin in hydrochloric acid. It reacts with chlorine to make tin (IV) chloride. It oxidizes in air. It is used to make other tin compounds and ruby glass. It reacts with bases to make the hydrated form of tin (II) oxide.
