Rotavirus is the cause of nearly 40% of hospitalizations from diarrhea in children under five[1]
Diarrhea also called Dysentery is the condition in which feces are discharged from the bowels frequently and in a liquid form. You have diarrhea if you have loose stools three or more times in one day.[2]
Causes
The most common causes of diarrhea include[2]:
- Bacteria from contaminated food or water
- Viruses such as the flu, norovirus, or rotavirus.
- Parasites
- Medicines such as antibiotics, cancer drugs, and antacids that contain magnesium
- Food intolerances and sensitivities like lactose intolerance.[3]
- Inflammatory causes such as Crohn's disease
- Problems with how the colon functions, such as irritable bowel syndrome
