Western Sahara (Arabic: الصحراء الغربية, as-Ṣaḥrā' al-Gharbīyah; Spanish: Sahara Occidental) is a territory of northwestern Africa, bordering Morocco on the north, Algeria on the northeast, Mauritania to the east and south, and the Atlantic Ocean on the west. The largest city is El Aaiún (Laâyoune), containing the majority of the population. The legal status of Western Sahara is disputed between Morocco and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.

- ↑ The capital, like the sovereignty status of this country, is in dispute. El Aaiún is the seat of Moroccan administration, but the country's leaders have established a temporary capital in Bir Lehlou and proposed a provisional seat of government at Tifariti.
