There are many different types of skin cancer, melanoma is the deadliest type of skin cancer out there. Skin cancer has been around for centuries and it is crazy to think that they still do not have a cure for the advanced stage of melanoma. It is very important to cover up the body before going in the sun. If skin is not covered then that burn that develops could possibly turn into skin cancer. If skin has a tan, its skin telling body that it is protecting your skin, it does not want to have skin cancer.

Different types of skin cancer

There are three main types of skin cancer; basal cell carcinoma (another word for cancer), squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. If an odd looking spot appears, it should be checked out. Skin cancer can either appear on old moles or freckles or they will completely form a new mark, that has never been there before. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer. This skin cancer is also the least dangerous. It usually will grow on the head, neck, or upper torso. It is a very slow growing skin cancer and can appear to be a red, pale, or a pearly color. Basal cell carcinoma will appear on the skin as a lump or a dry scaly area. Sometimes basal cell carcinoma will appear as a sore, but a sore that never goes away. Squamous cell carcinoma is a skin cancer, that is not as dangerous as melanoma, but it can travel through the body very quickly. It takes a couple of months to grow and it will appear on skin that has been affected by the sun. Squamous cell carcinoma will appear thick, red, and it can appear scaly and it can bleed very easily, crust, and ulcerate[1]

Melanoma is a fast growing skin cancer and is also the most dangerous skin cancer. If you have melanoma skin cancer for about six weeks it could already be life threatening, especially if it goes untreated. It can spread on the body. Even growing on places that have not been affected by skin cancer. Melanoma will appear on the skin flat and it will also have a uneven smudgy outline. It can also appear blotchy and can appear in many different colors. Some of those colors consist of brown, black, red, blue, and gray. Nodular melanoma is a very highly dangerous form of melanoma. When nodular melanoma appears on the skin it will appear raised and it will either be a pink, red, brown, or black. This type of cancer grows very quickly and can also be very life threatening. It is important to get the cancer removed as quickly as possible so be sure to be looking for signs of one.[1]

How to prevent skin cancer

Clothing is one of the most effective way’s to be protected from UV rays from the sun. People should buy cloths that have reflecting materials in it. This will be more helpful for keeping the suns UV rays off of you. Sunglasses are also very important. They protect your eyes from the sun. It is important to get sunglasses that block 99-100% UV rays. Also it is important to wear a hat when you are out in the sun. The rim or the hat should be 3 inches or longer. Sunscreen also helps prevent UV rays from affecting the skin. Be sure too use sunscreen that has at least 15 SPP (sun proof protection), the higher amount of SPP you have the better off you will be. Be sure to apply a good amount of sunscreen on 30 minutes prior to going outside, repeat every two hours. A good amount of sunscreen would be 1 ounce/2 tablespoons.[2]

It is bad to be in the sun from 10 am- 4 pm because sun rays are the strongest during these times. So it is important to be in the shade during these times to be safe. If you do plan on being outside be sure to be under a tree or under cover somehow. One sunburn can increase your chances of getting Melanoma, which is the deadliest form of skin cancer. If you have had 5 or more sunburns it has doubled your chances of having a lifetime risk. If you are ever in the sun and your skin starts to feel hot or starts to look to look red, get out of the sun immediately. Fake tanning is also very bad for your skin, so do not do it. A tan is never a good thing whether you get it from being outside or from a tanning salon. When your skin is over exposed to UV rays your skin/DNA is damaged. When your skin is tan, your skin is preventing further damage that could happen. The tan color is a darker color pigment, a wall that prevents more damage that has already occurred.[2]

How to cure skin cancer

A dermatologist takes a look at your skin, moles, growths, and dry patches on the skin. If they are having a hard time looking at your skin and deciding whether or not you have cancer they will use a dermoscope. This device will shine a light on the skin, showing the dermatologist any strange pigment and structures in the skin. If the dermatologist see’s something on the skin, they will cut that piece of skin off and send it in to the lab for testing. When they do this it is called a biopsy. The only way to tell if you have skin cancer is by going and getting a biopsy. Biopsies are not scary and they should not cause people any anxiety[3].

Once a dermatologist decides what kind of cancer someone has, and where it is on the body, whether the cancer is aggressive or not, the stage of the skin cancer 1, 2, 3, or 4, and the patients’ health. The dermatologist then can decide what kind of treatment to do for the skin cancer. The dermatologist can suggest many different kinds of treatments such as, surgical treatment. The options for surgical treatments are, excision, mohs surgery, curettage and electrodesiccation. Dermatologist can also suggest immune therapy, cryosurgery, chemotherapy applied to the skin, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. If skin cancer is caught early it is not as dangerous as finding out about it later[4].

Skin cancer was being studied in the 15th century, which was during the renaissance period. Galileo and Newton had developed an understanding of the human body. They came up with a thing called a autopsies. A man named Harvey had started practicing autopsies in 1628. This had helped him realize how blood flows through the body. In the year 1761 Giovanni Morgagni had begun giving several autopsies. He wanted to know what was causing death, and thinking out how to stop it. Later on it was discovered to be cancer. John Hunter had decided that some cancer needed to be treated with surgery[5].

In 1787, John Hunter a surgeon, had preformed a lesion on something thought to be skin cancer. He was one of the first people who had done something like this. John Hunter had claimed it to be a cancerous fungus excrescence. He was right, it was skin cancer and the worst kind out there, which is melanoma. The first person to recognize skin cancer was Rene Laennec. He had spoken about melanoma in a lecture he was teaching in 1804. In 1806 it was published that Rene had discovered melanoma skin cancer. In 1840, a medical doctor named Samuel Cooper stated that melanoma is untreatable in its advanced stage. Still to this day melanoma in its advanced stage is hard to treat. Doctors have not found a cure for advanced melanoma[6].
