- Helmholtz proposed that the sun's energy comes from gravitational contraction. Under this theory, the sun could not be more than about 20 million years old.

Creationists have played with this concept, mainly as a possible way of dealing with what was then of a lack of solar neutrinos. The discovery of the missing neutrinos has put an end to such theories.
