Scientific Classification

Sedges are monocot flowering plants, which belong to the taxonomic family Cyperaceae. Their type genus are called flatsedge (genus: Cyperus). They are considered closely related to grasses. Some well-known sedges include the water chestnut (Eleocharis dulcis) and the papyrus sedge (Cyperus papyrus), from which the Ancient Egyptian writing material was made.
