Tom,
I dont think we will categorize images by "source". I know that Wikimedia Commons does that, but it seems rather senseless to me.
There may be some unapparent reason why they do it - for example, wikipedia has a bot that checks for changes to flickr creative commons licenses. Unless we have a similar reason, dont bother. I dont think we should clutter the categories with them. --Mr. Ashcraft 17:17, 16 January 2007 (EST)
- Okay :-) --Tom 17:19, 16 January 2007 (EST)
- Well, I don't really know how you can clutter up the categories if everything is organized hierarchically. I personally go for as structured as I can., but fine by me. --Tom 17:21, 16 January 2007 (EST)
unknown source
Are we going to still categorize pictures as Category:Unknown source? That is useful for keeping track of them justi n case they need to be deleted, but not deleting them right away (gives people a chance to source them). --Tom 17:28, 16 January 2007 (EST)
- Yes, that is a good strategy. I sent Oliver a note asking him to provide that info and deleted the tag assuming he will.
- We will be creating a hierarchy, but the default display for categories will be by "most linked categories". I find that to be the most useful - at least at the moment. --Mr. Ashcraft 17:36, 16 January 2007 (EST)
- I assume you mean the "Categories" link on the left-hand menu? --Tom 17:38, 16 January 2007 (EST)
Copyright Status
We require that users provide a statement regarding the copyright status when uploading. See - thats what you get for setting up that form field.
Examples of statements include:
- Creative Commons: either state the specific licence or provide a link to the license.
- Federal government published file - state something similar to this - "This image is public domain because it was first published by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration."
- For other sites - find a use statement on their site and link to it.
- I fixed the images you uploaded today..
Wikimedia Commons has a pull down menu they use to choose from exceptable copyright statements. The choice then inserts a template tag on the image description page. Pretty sweet.. --Mr. Ashcraft 20:14, 16 January 2007 (EST)
- You're right ;-). All I did was move it from the English CreationWiki with the same data that it had from the original uploader. --Tom 20:22, 16 January 2007 (EST)
