The Vandals were an ancient Germanic tribe that originated in North Jutland (Denmark). They looted Roman Gaul and invaded Spain. Defeated by the Goths, they moved further south and invaded North Africa (429 AD), establishing a kingdom from which they controlled the western Mediterranean, with Carthage as it's capital. In 455 they returned to Italy and sacked Rome. The Vandals probably gave their name to the province of Andalusia (originally, Vandalusia), in Spain, where some of them settled. The Vandals were Arian Christians who persecuted Roman Catholics in Africa. They were conquered when the Byzantines invaded North Africa (533–534).
