Toothpaste is a paste or gel to be used with a toothbrush to preserve and improve tooth health and aesthetics. Since toothpaste did exist thousands of years ago, toothpaste has evolved from crushed eggs or ashes to complex compounds with more than 20 ingredients. These can be compounds to resist dental caries (tooth decay), gum disease, malodor, and dental calculus (tartar buildup). Toothpaste makes teeth whiter and cleaner and people add the flavor into the toothpaste because of bad breath and freshening the mouth. Toothpastes are formulated for maximum bioavailability of their actives. However, it can be challenging as compromises will have to be made when different actives are formulated in one. Research on toothpastes are done to create toothpastes with better qualities containing beneficial substances.
History
The materials that are used in toothpastes come from Egypt, where people found out that these materials protect teeth from undesirable factors. The reason toothpaste was created is for brushing teeth and to make breath very fresh. long time ago as 5000 years, people started using the toothpaste. People used liquid medicine and volcanism pumice, the ashes of cow hoof with eggshell, oyster shell mixed with abrasives, they used their hands to rub the teeth so they could get rid of the food and bacteria in their mouth. In China the age of 300s, the emperor thought that if you do the acupuncture on the certain parts of gingiva, it would get healed better than any other ways. This theory became the world’s very first as an exotic concept cleaning the mouth. However, before the 17th century, people thought using toothpaste is kind of fiction or not common in that time. For example in the 1st century, from the feces from the wolves and pick out the bones from the wolves, if they carry the band around the neck they believed their teeth could get better. In the 1st century in Greece and Rome, they tied the wire to the teeth and manufactured the equipment for the teeth care. A powder toothpaste came out around in 18th century in Europe. At this time, some of the toothpaste people used was terrible. They added glycerin to make the toothpaste taste better but powder of the bricks and strong abrasives such as powder of bricks and plates ruined their teeth worse. In 1850s, in order to make teeth whiter, they started adding the cement to toothpaste, Creme Dentifrice invented the bottle toothpaste. In 1873, he manufactured the Colgate as a bottle toothpaste and sell them.[1] fadifndanfjkewanvwe [1]
Purpose
Toothpaste is made of chemical powder, cream, and liquid. Toothpaste is really useful for prevention or treatment. For example: disinfection, dental calculus, breath, dental caries, and pyorrhea alveolaris. Toothpaste has calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, calcium sulfate, magnesium carbonate, and magnesium chloride]]. These chemical compounds help the cleaning of teeth, If the particle’s size, hardness, and shape. If compounds are not suitable, it could damage the surface of the teeth, so these are requirements in toothpaste manufacturing Particle’s size is to be about 1~20μm, the shape should not be too sharp, and Mohs hardness scale is require to be 3. Toothpaste also contain detergent, perfume, pigment, disinfectant, and counter-agent. Not just the purpose of getting rid of bad breath, feeling fresh, and cleaning the teeth, The main purpose of the toothpaste is prevention of dental caries (tooth decay) and infection by pyorrhea alveolaris (pathologic bacteria). The powder used in toothpaste does not damage the enamel on the surface of the teeth.[2]
Types Toothpaste
In order to make powder toothpaste, people added three types of calcium phosphate, calcium sulfate, magnesium carbonate, talc, kaolin, and mostly calcium carbonate as in 88%~95% of its components. in order to make a cleansing effect, they added soap, borax, and higher alcohol’s ester sulfate. To sweeten the toothpaste they use glycerin, sugar, and saccharin. To make the breath fresh, they often usually put minty incense into the toothpaste. Medicinal toothpaste, to prevent dental caries uses antiseptic like hexylresorcinol, nicotinamide and they also use enzyme inhibitor like vitamin k, and sodium N-acetylsulfanilate. To prevent alveolar pyorrhea, they use dental calculus remover like lactic acid, and zeolite. Anti-inflammatories or vitamins like hinokitiol, azulene are added also. Chlorophyll also fluorine and enamel as they are combined together, they increase their resistance to the acidic things, commonly they add it into the toothpaste in a form of sodium fluoride. Chlorophyll is used to remove bad breath. In a form of sodium fluoride, fluorine and enamel is combined together and added into toothpaste to increase teeth's resistance to acidic substances. [3]
