The Karoo refers to a large desert area in South Africa, a smaller valley called the Little Karoo, and a geological formation of sedimentary strata called the Karoo Supergroup.  The Karoo covers about two thirds of South Africa and at least 40,000 fossils have been collected from Karoo rocks.
