Derodontidae is a of beetles, in its own superfamily, Derodontoidea, sometimes known as tooth-necked fungus beetles. There are about 10 species in 4 genera. Beetles of this family are small, between 2 and 6 mm in length, with spiny margins on their pronotum (part of the thorax) that give them their name. The genus, Laricobius, lacks these spines. They have two ocelli on the top of their heads.
Derodontidae, a family of beetles, part of its own superfamily, [[Derodontoidea]], is commonly called tooth-necked fungus beetles. They are closely related to the [[Bostrichoidea]], of which  the death watch beetles, skin beetles, and powder-post beetles belong to. There are about 10 species in 4 genera in Derodontidae. It is a small beetle, between 2 and 6 mm in length, with spiny margins on their pronotum (part of the thorax)   of which they are named after. The [[Laricobius]], a genus of Derodontidae, doesn't have these spines these spines. They have two ocelli (a type of simple eye common to invertebrates, consisting of retinal cells, pigments, and nerve fibers.) http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ocelli 8 november 2011 on the top of their heads. Found on http://www.probertencyclopaedia.com/brow 8 november 2011. Their [[maxillae]] (one of the paired appendages immediately behind the mandibles of arthropods) http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/maxillae 8 november 2011 are exposed at the base. Their antennae are inserted before their small, prominent eyes and have large [[elytra]], (hardened forewings of certain insects, as beetles, forming a protective covering for the posterior or flight wings.) http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/elytra which completely cover the [[abdomen]]. The tooth-necked fungus beetle's legs are moderate for its size, and it is usually brown, brick-red, brownish-red, or brownish-yellow.

They are related to the Bostrichoidea, which includes the death watch beetles, skin beetles, powder-post beetles and other subgroups.

Some species feed on slime molds, but the larvae and adults of the genus Laricobius are predators of woolly adelgids which attack conifers, and species of this genus are used as biological control agents in the United States for control of balsam woolly adegid and hemlock woolly adelgid.
