Many other health risks often develop in people who have Down syndrome. These include acute lymphocytic leukemia (a type of blood cancer), intestinal problems, and thyroid disease. As well as having a high risk for disease, people with Down syndrome have a short life expectancy of fifty-five years, although people have been reported to live past eighty.
