Literature, from the Latin word for "letter," means any written works. This may include works of fiction, consisting entirely of made-up stories, or scientific, historical, or other treatises. Arguably it includes the Bible, though that Work, being Divinely inspired, is in a class by itself. Thus literature usually means works of and by man.
