Summary
Using commonly found rye grass seed, G. Washington's troops commonly distilled rye mash into alcohol during the American Revolutionary War. A small portion of the triple-distilled alcohol was added to drinking water in order to make it fit for consumption by killing bacteria. A serious deterrent to drunkenness: any soldier found intoxicated while on duty was subject to hanging.
As seen at the American Revolutionary War reenactment, Cantigny Park, Wheaton, Illinois.
