Summary

1984 Eruption of Mauna Loa Volcano. (March 28th)

Lava pours down a well-developed lava channel near the erupting vents (background). The vent erupting the greatest volume of lava is in upper right. By March 29, this channel fed an `a`a flow flow that reached 25 km from the vents; the channel width varied 20 to 50 m and extended to within 1 to 2 km of the flow front. In the morning on March 29, a blockage and overflow of the channel occurred about 12 km from the vents (1,800-m level) and took most of the supply away from this lower flow.
