Summary
Copper metal dipped in HCl and heated in a flame. The HCl evaporates to make hydrogen chloride gas. The oxygen reacts with the hot copper to make copper(II) oxide. The copper(II) oxide reacts with the hydrogen chloride to make copper(II) chloride, which makes the green color in a flame.
