Summary
Ricinus communis in flower - the beans yield castor oil but their coats are the source of the notorious poison ricin, best known for its use in the assassination of Bulgarian dissident Georgi Markov on a London street in 1978. A small pellet of purified ricin was shot, presumably by a Bulgarian secret policeman, into Markov's leg from the spike of a modified umbrella. Ricin prevents protein synthesis by interfering with the activity of ribosomes.
