Summary
Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895) 1891.
N.B. National Portrait Gallery gives date of similar portrait (NPG P429) as 1891, and comparison of hair and clothes strongly suggests the two portraits were taken on the same day — hence date adjusted.
Photo is by the firm of William & Daniel Downey [previously attributed to Daniel Downey (1829-1881)] active ca. 1872-1919; Photographer probably John Edwards [ref: Pritchard M. 1994. A directory of London photographers 1891-1908 states Edwards was their usual photographer]
