Summary
These are the cones of the lodgepole pine that we saw throughout Yellowstone. The interesting thing about these cones are that some are "serotinous" and will only open to release their seeds when exposed to extreme temperatures like that of a forest fire. These trees are often the first new growth after a forest fire. They are shade intolerant, which is why lower branches will die off giving the tree an odd appearance--very tall but with green and growing branches only at the very top.
