Ica stone
The Ica stones are a collection of over fifteen thousand carved stones reported from the vicinity of Ica, Peru. The images on the stones are claimed by some to have been created in pre-Columbian times and to have been found in association with Native American burials. The earliest known European report sometimes cited is from the Spanish priest and Jesuit missionary Father Simon in 1535, with samples reportedly sent to Spain in 1562. In more modern times, the stones have been made widely known through the collection and publications of the late Dr. Javier Cabrera.
What the stones depict
The Ica stones display images ranging from dinosaurs to telescopes to open-heart surgery. Some carvings appear to be simply etched depressions in the rock, while others are raised images, requiring particular artistic skill. In certain cases, dinosaurs are seen in combat with humans, and in others people appear to be riding dinosaur-like creatures. Although stylized, some authors have argued that the depictions resemble known fossil reconstructions and skin textures.
Authenticity of the stones
Because the images appear to show dinosaurs and relatively advanced technology, most professional archaeologists and paleontologists regard the stones as modern creations rather than ancient artifacts. It has been widely reported that some of Cabrera’s stone suppliers stated on record that they carved stones themselves for sale to tourists and collectors. These statements have been interpreted by many scholars as evidence of modern manufacture, although it has also been noted that the sale of genuine antiquities is illegal under Peruvian law, which complicates historical testimony.
While it is generally acknowledged that a number of the stones are modern, opinions differ regarding the status of the entire collection. Some proponents have pointed to historical references and to the presence of a dark surface coating (often described as a patina) on many stones as possible indicators of age. Critics, however, note that surface darkening alone does not establish antiquity, since similar coatings can be produced artificially by heating, smoke exposure, or application of organic substances, and that controlled archaeological excavation contexts for the stones are lacking.
It is also noteworthy that many researchers and organizations within the creationist community have expressed caution or skepticism regarding the Ica Stones and do not regard them as reliable evidence for human–dinosaur coexistence. Several leading creation science groups emphasize that the biblical case for recent creation and the coexistence of humans and land animals does not depend upon the authenticity of the Ica Stones, and that questionable artifacts should be carefully tested and critically evaluated.
