The periapsis of any object in orbit is the length of the closest approach of that object to its primary. The term periapsis also includes all manner of specialized substitutions such as perihelion, periastron, perigee, periares, perijove, or peri-whatever. The usual object in view is a planet or a moon, and the primary is either the sun or whatever planet the moon is orbiting. The approved units for displaying planetary distances are km,AU,mi.
