This article concerns the grandfather of King Hezekiah of the Southern Kingdom. For other men of the Bible having this name or other forms of it, see Zechariah (disambiguation).

Zechariah or Zachariah (Hebrew: YHWH has remembered) was the high priest of the Temple in Jerusalem during the only period in the history of Judah that the Temple worship was closed down completely by the King. Zechariah may have lived to see vindication when his grandson, King Hezekiah, came to the throne and rededicated the Temple.

Father-in-law to the king

Zechariah had a daughter named Abi. The Bible says that she became the mother of King Hezekiah when the boy's father, Ahaz, was eleven years old.

For a full discussion on the probable child marriage of Ahaz and Abi, see the article Ahaz.

Raising a king

Hezekiah, in sharp contrast to his father, became the most renowned reformer in the history of the Southern Kingdom. It is very likely that Zechariah was in charge of the supervision and education of his grandson Hezekiah during the years of his minority. Especially, as the Temple was closed, he would have had few responsibilities.
