The term terrestrial planet derives from the Latin word for Earth, terra. It is used to describe planetary bodies which are similar in size, shape, and composition to that of Earth's.
In our solar system the term implies the four planets closest to the sun; Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. The terrestrial planets are solid, spherical, and enveloped by atmosphere. The Earth is the largest of them and is the only one known to contain life.
