The pigeon, its most famous land bird in the world. The pigeon, directly from the name, is classified as a Columbidae family. This bird lives on the tropical and warm regions. This bird has short and thin necks, small heads, and heavy plumage. The pigeon is recognizable by their head-bobbing stride. This bird finds almost worldwide and about 175 species live in the world. This species include the new and old world species and old world stretopelia species. [1]

Adult pigeon has red and orange eyes. Young pigeon that is less than 6 to 8 months old have brown or gray eyes. Pigeon has exceptionally outstanding eyesight. Pigeon can distinguish colors like humans do, however pigeon’s eyesight is able to detect Ultra-Violet that humans can’t see in the light spectrum. Because of that outstanding ability, pigeon often used in human rescue missions.[2] Not only exceptional eye sight but pigeon also has extensive system of interconnected air sacs. It serves fresh air to its lung by inspiration. As much as 75% of the air passes the lung and flows through the air sacs then it serves fresh air to its lung system. Additionally, during the expiration, air bypasses its lungs so that they can get fresh air in both ways.[3]

Reproduction

The pigeon, its reproduces throughout the year, can raise about five broods every one year, and during early winter. The male bird keeps the nest during the day; female bird at night. The female bird lays two or three white eggs. Both parents usually give and take keeping eggs warm. Eggs hatch during 16 to 19 days and the young birds feed crop milk for the first two weeks. Finally seeds take the place of the crop milk. [4]

Pigeons, unlike its beauty and friendliness with human, have caused several problems including its dropping and aesthetic problems. Moreover, their droppings can damage man-made creatures such as bronze statue, building, and bridge, with their acidic condition of droppings. [5]

Pigeons are distributed world-wide Eurasia, Africa, and America. There are some what differentiated species of pigeons so that they have different names in different areas. For instance, the most popular North American pigeon is mourning pigeon, and smallest pigeon which can be mainly found in southern US and New World tropics are called sparrow-sized ground pigeon.[6]

The pigeon’s general habitat, a pigeon nest located on concealed building ledges that look like high cliffs. Usually male bird brings the nesting substance to his mate, when the time become, female bird constructs the nest. After 2-3 days, usually pigeon nest is complete. [7]
