Supernova remnants

Main Article: supernova remnant

Nebulae are otherwise known as supernova remnants. They are the remains of stars that have exploded, or gone supernova. Upon the death of a star, it first undergoes the transition to a white dwarf, which then blows off its outer layer to form a nebula.

Nebula hypothesis

Main Article: Nebula hypothesis

Nebulae are believed by secular cosmologists to be the birthplace of stars. Stellar formation is hypothesized to occur when these clouds of gas and dust collapse under their own gravity into a ball of plasma to form a star. It is thought that shockwaves from nearby supernovae may serve as a trigger for star formation in nearby nebulae.
