Matthew Maury

Matthew Fontaine Maury [fontān' môr'ē] (1806–1873) was an American oceanographer. He was born in 1806 near Fredericksburg, Virginia. In 1825, he joined into the navy. In 1842, Maury was appointed superintendant of the Depot of Charts and Instruments of the Navy Department in Washington. During this, he developed wind and current charts of the Atlantic. He was the first person to chart ocean currents. He wrote widely on navigation and naval reform, and his Physical Geography of the Sea (1855) was the first classic work of modern oceanography.
He got the inspiration for his meteorological theories from Bible passages such as Psalm 8:8 where it describes paths of the sea. Many believe that discoveries, such as Maury's, illustrate scientific foreknowledge in the Bible. He included other Biblical passages of scientific importance in his books, such as a quote from the book of Job 28:25.
