In June 1902 a theologian named John Peters and a scholar named Hermann Thiersch discovered two painted burial caves at Marisa, which is located 40 miles southwest of Jerusalem. The men noticed that cave robbers had already been in the same caves so they quickly got men to photograph the paintings. Soon after the paintings deteriorated and now the originals can not even be seen.Some of the paintings include a few mythical creatures and also animals located by the Nile basin and horn of Africa. I also had Cerberus, the three-headed guard-dog of Hades.The paintings are one of the first major discoveries of the Hellenistic period.
