In Genesis 6-8 Bible tells that Noah and his family survived a devastating global flood by following God's instructions to build a massive ark, in which they placed 2 of every unclean land animal and seven clean. The ark was defined as being three hundred cubits long (450 ft), twenty two and a half meters wide (75 ft) and thirteen and a half meters high (45 ft).[1] The bible also says that following the flood the ark came to rest in the mountains of Ararat.

"and on the seventeenth day of the seventh month the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat." Genesis 8:1-4

Numerous sightings of the ark have been reported and many expeditions undertaken to search for its remain, but as of yet no discovery has been confirmed to be the Ark of Noah. Most searches have focused on Mt. Ararat and its immediate area.

If we were to find the ark it would be the biggest biblical discovery of modern times. There are many different places that the ark is thought to be and thought to be seen. We don't know if the ark would have survived so long, but it could very well have. The ark was huge and we are surprised that we haven’t found it. Not even documents of ancient times mention it. The two main places are Iran, Mt. Ararat, and there are many others.

Ararat Mountains

Mount Ararat is found in eastern turkey and is one the tallest in the world. Ararat is one of few mountains around. It and all the surrounding mountains have been checked but have nothing to show. The Turkish government will not lets us search for the ark on Ararat. The conditions of Ararat's peak would maybe preserve the ark because of freezing temperatures.[2]

Sightings

The Bible says that the Ark came to rest in the mountains of Ararat. There has been many sightings of the ark recorded throughout history. People hiking have claimed to have found it such as Georgie Hagopian. Georgie Hagopian was a boy when his uncle had brought him to the ark. He claimed to have stood on the Ark, his uncle shot the Ark and the bullet bounced off. His description of size and look does not fit the account in Genesis. Another sighting was made by man named Ed Davis. He went hiking and camped about one hundred feet above it. He could not get near it though.

Discovery Claims

Ararat Anomaly

Main Article: Ararat Anomaly

The Ararat Anomaly is an area of ice that when it is partly melted down, looks as thought the remains of the ark. Photos of this site have been taken by the military and were released to the public in March of 1995. A vessel buried in ice would increase the chance of it being preserved. Not really knowing what Gopher wood and pitch were, scientists guess that pitch was some kind of resin or tree sap. As to what the wood is scientists do not know. The Turkish authorities believe that the CIA had placed a listening post there to listen to the soviets. Mount Ararat has been closed to the public, making it extremely hard to search for the Ark. [2] Another explanation of this anomaly is linear facades. They form when ice slides down a mountain slowly.

Porcher Taylor is the man that the photos were released to. He has studied them deeply. He fought to get his hands on the photos, he has worked on this project for thirteen years. After careful study it has been pointed out that this would be about as big as one of the largest aircraft carriers. *[3]

The Iran Claim

In the Elburz Mountains a group of scientists discovered what is thought to be a mass of stone beams. The beams looked as though they had once been wood. The Elburz Mountains are located in Iran. Another source of proof would be that they also discovered fossils of marine animals such as shells and other small crustaceans. The rock beams they found turned out to be petrified wood. The group also found wood and broken pottery not far form the location indicating that the area was a place of worship. This find does not seem likely to many people because none of Noah's workmanship shows, even wooden pegs would us more to base our information on. Many tests have been done but, no results have come in handy in proving that the finding was really the ark. The biggest problem we have is that the ark is made of gopher wood, we have no idea what that is.[5][6]

The Durupinar Site

Main Article: Durupinar

A man named Captain Ilhan Durupinar discovered a formation in the ground that resembled the shape of an ark on October of 1959. In 1960, he and another team surveyed the site and after two days of digging, found nothing of artefactual importance. The site was not paid much attention till Ron Wyatt wanted to try in 1977. In the 1980's he tried to get people to pay more attention to this site. When 1985 rolled around he visited the site with a group of specialists. They took along a few different to tools and other technology to find anything in the ground. The in ground radar also picked up nothing just as before when the Turkish government dug it up. They also measured the site and found that the site was five hundred and thirty eight feet long, that is almost three hundred cubits just as the bible tells us. This site has been made into a tourist attraction and many people have seen it now. Many think that the site is just a mere coincidence. Also the shape did not fit the biblical descriptions[7]

Hoaxes of the Ark

There have been many hoaxes in claim to have found the ark. A french man told people that he have found a wooden beam that supposedly belonged to Noah’s Ark. The beam was dated at ninety five and fifty years old two different times. Come to find out the man was found out. His guide had told them that the man bought it from a village. A man named George Jammal also claimed to have found a piece of wood while exploring. Jammal turned out to be an actor and he had taken the wood from Long Beach California and hardened it by cooking it with things that made it very hard.[8]

Conclusion

Man has yet to find the Ark. The discovery of the Ark could either help us or destroy us. Many scientists believe that it will help them in the fact that it will give them something to base our knowledge on. Other scientist don’t think that the finding of the ark will be beneficial because the people will try and find out how to disprove the ark and convince them that it is all a misunderstanding or hoax.
