Joktan

Joktan or Yoktan (Hebrew: יָקְטָן, Yoqtan; Arabic: قحطان, Qahtan; "little") was the second of the two sons of Eber (Gen. 10:25; 1 Chr. 1:19) mentioned in the Hebrew Bible and means "small" or "smallness". In the Book of Genesis 10:25 "And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg, for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan."

Descent from Joktan

Josephus claimed that the Indians of India are descended from the sons of Joktan:

“

Now Joctan, one of the sons of Heber, had these sons, Elmodad, Saleph, Asermoth, Jera, Adoram, Aizel, Decla, Ebal, Abimael, Sabeus, Ophir, Euilat, and Jobab. These inhabited from Cophen, an Indian river, and in part of Asia adjoining to it. And this shall suffice concerning the sons of Shem. (Antiquities of the Jews, Book I, Chapter 6.)

Joktan's blood is infused with all Arabian tribes, and held in high esteem. It is believed that Joktan's sons, Almodad, Sheleph, and Hazarmaveth are the fathers of the Arabian Joktanite tribes while, the other, remaining sons (Jerah, Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, Obal, Abimael, Sheba, Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab) are the fathers of the Joktanite/Semitic component of India.
