John (Hebrew, "God is Merciful"), in its various forms, is the second most common name in the world (Mohammed is the most common).
Biblical use
John is the name of three significant people in the Bible:
- John the Baptist, who "prepared the way" for Jesus Christ, and was beheaded by Herod Antipas
- The Apostle John, son of Zebedee, the "disciple whom Jesus loved", and author of at least five books of the New Testament
- John was another name for Mark, disciple of Paul of Tarsus, and author of The Gospel of Mark
John is also the name of four books of the New Testament: the Gospel of John, I John, II John, and III John.
It is noteworthy that the Apostle Peter is referred to in some passages (e.g. John 1:42) as the son of John, and in others as the son of Jonah (or Jonas). The two words are different names in Hebrew, but in New Testament Greek they are very similar, leading to discrepancies among some manuscripts.
