Herpetology is a branch of zoology concerned with the study of reptiles, such as snakes, turtles, lizards, and amphibians, such as frogs, toads, and salamanders. The term comes from the Greek word herpeton, which means "to creep", and logos meaning "word" or "study".

An evolutionary herpetologist is involved with taxonomic classification while a creationist would depend more so upon cladistics while each focuses heavily upon the ecology, behavior, physiology, anatomy, and paleontology of reptiles and amphibians.
