Hananiah

Hananiah (Hebrew, "God is gracious"), or Ananias (often written Hananias in Greek), is the name of at least four personages in the Bible:

• A friend of Daniel, known to history by his Babylonian name Shadrach, who was thrown into a burning fiery furnace for refusing to worship the gold statue erected by Nebuchadnezzar II (Daniel 3 )
• A false prophet who died in 596 BC after a dispute with Jeremiah in the presence of then-king Zedekiah (Jeremiah 28:16-17 )
• A member of the early Church, who died suddenly after misrepresenting a contribution he had made to the communal fund. (Acts 5:1-11 )
• The head of the Sanhedrin who famously ordered someone to strike Paul of Tarsus in the mouth during a session of that body when Paul was brought before it. (Acts 23:1-3 )
