Benjamin (tribe)

The tribe of Benjamin descends from Benjamin, the youngest son of Jacob. It has the following distinctions:

1. In the era of the Judges, the Benjamites became involved in a disastrous internecine war with the rest of the tribes, after a Levite's concubine had been brutally murdered. In that war, most of the Benjamite women were killed. The tribes remedied this first by giving the Benjamites a right-of-first-refusal on female prisoners of war taken in the Battle of Jabesh-gilead, and then "allowed" the Benjamites to seize what women they would from Shiloh at the time of the wine harvest. 2. King Saul, first King of the United Kingdom, was a Benjamite.
3. The Benjamites were the only tribe to remain loyal to the tribe of Judah during the Great Revolt of the Ten Tribes. The Benjamites and Judah-ites continued as the Southern Kingdom
4. Saint Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles, was a Benjamite. Romans 11:1
