Aluminum Oxide is created when two Aluminum atoms and three Oxygen atoms combine together. Aluminum is a metal and Oxygen is a gas. The compound is crystalline. One of the most well known crystals of Aluminum oxide is corundum. Corundum is usually a clear crystal but if there are impurities it can be different colors. We get rubies and sapphires from it. Aluminum oxide is really strong and is resistant to wear, which is why it is used in ceramics. Aluminum oxide has many everyday uses.

Properties
Aluminum oxide has good mechanical strength, heat conductivity, fire resistance, corrosive and wear resistance, sliding properties, and also it is a good electric insulator. Aluminum Oxide is very hard, it is rated a 9 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness.
There are two different ways to find the optical properties of aluminum oxide. Those ways are by using vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy and by electron energy-loss spectroscopy. Vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy by definition means, a method of spectral analysis using wavelengths between 100 and 300 nm that utilizes both emission and absorption techniques. Electron energy-loss spectroscopy means substance is bombarded with monochromatic electrons, and the energies of scattered electrons are measured to determine the distribution of energy loss.
Occurrences
Aluminum Oxide is mined up from the earth. One of its forms is a crystal which is called Corundum. Rubies and sapphires come from this crystal. What happens is that when you get corundum from the earth it is a clear crystal but sometimes if there are impurities in the crystal they change colors. Most of the rubies and sapphires are mined in Australia, Madagascar, and Montana.
Uses
Aluminum Oxide can be used in the making of ceramics. It is very useful when you are making ceramics because it has good mechanical strength, heat conductivity, fire resistant, corrosion and wear resistance, sliding properties, and it is a good electric insulation. Those properties do not relate to all of the ceramics that are created from aluminum oxide. Aluminum oxide can be mined and sometimes it is used as a natural abrasive so most emery boards are made from aluminum oxide, also a lot of sandpaper is made from Aluminum Oxide. It is also used in the coating of compact fluorescent lamps. Microdermabrasion uses aluminum oxide crystals. Aluminum oxide can be found as a crystal which is called corundum.
